Understanding IP Ratings for Commercial Festoon Lights
An IP code identifies the dust and water protection tested for a particular enclosure or product. It helps select outdoor lighting, but it does not by itself prove UV resistance, cable strength, lifetime or suitability for every installation.
What the two digits mean
The first digit describes protection against solid objects and dust. The second describes protection against water. IP65 and IP67 share the same first digit, but their water tests differ: IP65 covers water jets under the relevant test conditions, while IP67 covers temporary immersion under its test conditions. Check the test standard and exact report before comparing claims.
Apply the rating to the correct component
For the applicable WENDADECO festoon configurations, the string is IP65. A matching 24V transformer may be IP67. Bulbs and connectors can have different ratings, depending on their exact tested models. The transformer rating does not turn the string or the complete installed system into IP67.
Questions for a supplier
- Which model numbers and components are listed in the IP test report?
- Does the quotation use the same bulb, holder, connector, end cap and transformer as the tested configuration?
- How will connections and cable ends be protected in the intended mounting position?
- What other evidence is available for the destination market and installation conditions?
